Obestatin ("Obesity suppression") is a hormone recently described to be produced from the stomach. It is produced by cleavage of the pro-hormone of Ghrelin, pre-pro-ghrelin. In contrast to Ghrelin which is derived from the same pro-hormone, Obestatin seems to show anorexigenic properties. Obestatin decreases food intake in rats with a reduction in body weight. Science. 2005 Nov 11;310(5750):996-9. It also reduces intestinal (jejunal) motility. Obestatin seems to be the ligand for the orphan G protein coupled receptor GPR39.
